For those of you who haven’t bothered to go to the “about me” page, I’ll give you an ever-so-brief introduction: I’m an attorney who does research and writing for a living. I’m also a recreational fantasy writer. This blog will focus on my recreational writing only.
Now for an idea of where I’m at with my writing. I’m currently working on a novel, and just broke the 30,000 word mark (30,141 words, to be exact). That’s quite a large accomplishment for me — in the past, I’ve never gotten past the 15,000 word mark.
The novel combines political intrigue with the harshness of war. It’s written from the point-of-view of several characters, including a King, a conscripted soldier, generals and colonels as well as mercenaries. The world is what I would call low-high magic; that is, magic is relatively rare (low), but where it exists, it is very powerful (high). It’s definitely not a focus of the book — in future books in the series, it will play a larger role.
My hope is to start getting about 2,000-3,000 words per week written. When I first started the novel, that wasn’t difficult — I pumped out the first 10,000 words in less than a month. Since then, I’ve slowed considerably — I’ve probably only written 1,000 for the month of July. I want to kick it into gear. Time to write.
Good luck with your novel! I’ve just come upon your blog, via The Interminable Writer. There’s always room for another writing blog!
